The audio spectacle "Brodskiy. Trial" is based on the transcripts made by writer and journalist Frida Vigderova during the trial. As the creators of the project note, these materials are considered a point of reference for Soviet samizdat. "Brodskiy. Trial" is a reconstruction of events, relying on the principles of cinema, but without images, emphasizes director and writer Savva Saveliev.
"I was interested in exploring Brodsky as a young man who was arrested and tried for vagrancy. This is not yet the Brodsky we know. He’s 23 years old, living modestly in a one-and-a-half-room apartment with his parents, writing poetry. And suddenly, he finds himself caught in the mechanisms of the system. A system where witnesses of the prosecution are people who do not personally know him. A system where the court becomes a blind tribunal. A system where he is denied a voice and all evidence of his innocence and the absurdity of the charges are dismissed. Yakov Gordin recalls that during the trial, Joseph Brodsky behaved detached and was calm. These words became key for us in deciding how to construct the audio reconstruction of the court. Here, Brodsky is not yet the familiar figure we know. He’s different. The judge, prosecutors, witnesses—on the contrary—they seem painfully familiar to us. I hope that those who prefer audio and video formats over reading will discover Frida Vigderova’s court recording in a new way. And those who have known this recording for a long time will hear it for the first time. Such a court will never be repeated again." — Savva Saveliev
